Electrical installations in the state of Victoria where there may be an ignition hazard due to the presence of flammable gas or vapor, mixed with air under normal atmospheric conditions are required to be designed and installed to the appropriate Australian standards and guidelines.

Classification of areas where flammable gas or vapor or mist hazards may arise are required to delineate by an appropriately qualified person or authority.
Work on electrical installations where flammable gas or vapor or mist hazards are present in the state of Victoria is deemed to be prescribed work and as such requires verification and certification by a Hazardous class electrical inspector, to provide for the safety and proper functioning for the use intended.

Common installations that have hazardous areas include service stations, spray booths, sewerage pumping stations, and laboratories in schools and the workplace.
